PEP (TCP Acceleration)

Users operating routers over satellite know all too well the detrimental effects high latency (and potentially errors too) have on the efficiency of regular, terrestrial routers. To combat these effects on TCP routing, Vocality offers the PEP - a feature which combats the effects of latency on regular, non-secure TCP/IP traffic.

From Wikipedia : Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEPs) are devices to improve the end-to-end performance of some communications protocol such as TCP. PEPs function by breaking the end-to-end connection into multiple connections and using different parameters to transfer data across the different legs. This allows the end systems to run unmodified and can overcome some problems with TCP window sizes on the end systems being set too low for satellite communications.

Users will see very little benefit at low data rates, but for links of approximately 192Kbps or more, the effect upon file transfers and regular network activity can be dramatic - with significantly improved throughput - thus making maximum use of expensive satellite bandwidth.

A demonstration feature key is available for the PEP, allowing users 24 hours to try the code in their existing Vocality network.
