TCP PEP Acceleration
The issue of poor TCP connection performance over high-delay links is well-known and well documented. The Vocality TCP Performance Enhancing Proxy (PEP) is intended to increase the performance of TCP connections running over high-delay and possibly error-prone satellite links.
Many manufacturers use TCP acceleration in their devices. However, unlike these, Vocality’s TCP over satellite accelerator is built into the core of the router – at the heart of each Vocality product - and achieves TCP acceleration over high latency links without recourse to third party routers or complex configuration.
To provide the error-free data stream between the two TCP endpoints, Vocality runs proprietary error detection and correction datagram protocol between the end stations – this protocol is tuned to the actual delays and error rates seen on typical satellite links and therefore provides a much better performance over these links than the TCP protocol. We avoid sending retransmitted data unless we know that a datagram was lost or corrupted. As well as the obvious advantage of a performance increase due to the better buffering and flow control of the data across the satellite connection, the Vocality TCP PEP provides header compression and fast start support.
